Possible
Subjects for the FAVOR Artists Wall
In trying to educate and inspire the community to care for our four National Wildlife Refuges, FAVOR has come up with a list of potential subjects to help artists decide which works to submit. The art medium can be painting, photography, graphic design, sculpture, video, ceramic tiles, pottery, etc, etc, etc.
The main subject areas, as best we can intimate are: Native Keys animals, plants, habitats, landscapes or sustainable issues. Remember, all work must be accompanied with an educational statement about your subject, so do your homework!
*These subject areas
and lists are by no means inclusive and the artist is welcomed to contact the
Refuge Visitor Center if they have a question on a particular subject.
1) Native Animals to the
Keys
For our Keys Kids in Nature program, FAVOR has developed a short list of Florida Keys animals (click here) The Keys birding guide is a great source for a complete listing of all birds that make appearances in the Keys. The library or internet is a great source for lists and natural history information for many critters.
2) Native Plants to the Keys
The Institute for Regional Conservation has a great website to both learn what plants are native to your county and even to your zip code. Follow the link below and enter Monroe County for a large listing of possibilities. Click on any plant to see pictures and get info!

3) Native Habitats of the
Keys
Major habitats in the Florida Keys include:
Great info can be found in the “Florida Keys Environmental Story”, available in our bookstore as well as any library in the Keys. The Institute for Regional Conservation also has limited info on their habitat page:

4) Sustainable Issues
Can a solar water heater be artistic? – OF COURSE! FAVOR welcomes submissions a little bit out of the ordinary that show off better ways of living with the environment. Shade grown coffee, home xeriscaping, electric cars, are all potential subjects, as long as you can fit these themes into the artists space provided.
5) Big Picture
Do you have material from other natural areas? Art depicting other National Wildlife Refuges and their associated animals, plants and landscapes falls under the “Big Picture” Category. Although potentially not as strong of a submission as Florida Keys related art, the committee highly encourages artists to share their natural inspirations from other Refuges.
