Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge

The Great White Heron NWR, established in 1938, was set aside in 1938 to protect their mangrove nesting grounds from hunters.

The Great White Heron is the name given to herons that exhibit the white color phase of the more popular blue phase of the Great Blue Heron. The Great White Heron lives in marine habitats in southern Florida and Cuba. Its diet consists of fish, aquatic invertebrates, frogs, and small mammals.

Breeding involves courtship rituals, such as feather-fluffing, stereotyped posture, twig shaking and display flights. The female lays 1 -7 eggs. The Great White Heron is approximately 40 -50 inches in length, the largest of North American Herons.
