TO STATE ATTORNEY (Dated

We, the undersigned, are appalled by the recent killing (March 24, 2006) of an American Alligator at the Blue Hole on Big Pine Key, Florida. The 6’-7’ female has been a resident there for several years, along with her 9’ male mate, and has been visited by countless thousands of people. She was a beloved part of this observation pond, which is located in the middle of a federal refuge and is a major tourist attraction (90,000 visitors annually), used for environmentally educational programs. The premeditated, heinous way she was killed, with her eyes shot out and clubbed to death with a baseball bat, as well as the way 3 migratory birds were killed just to lure her to the poachers, is unconscionable. We petition that the state attorney’s office investigate and prosecute these crimes to the fullest, and that the maximum penalties be called for on these 4 perpetrators, regardless of their age or status, with no probation.
